Why did you choose this area of focus for your staff?

Pelican Business Services recognised the impact menopause can have on employees, both mentally and physically.

A review of flexible working requests revealed that some female employees sought reduced hours due to menopause-related challenges. The company acknowledged that this was not an isolated issue and took proactive steps to support employees affected by menopause.

Description of intervention

To address these concerns, Pelican Business Services launched the Meet4Menopause network and implemented the following initiatives:

  • Created a working group and network to facilitate open discussions and peer support.
  • Encouraged participation from partners and family members, providing guidance on how to support loved ones experiencing menopause.
  • Developed a dedicated intranet hub, offering resources, articles, and practical tips.
  • Engaged external experts, such as the Bristol Menopause Group, to share insights and host informative sessions.
  • Organised lunchtime chat sessions, providing employees with a safe space to discuss experiences and challenges.

What was the rationale for introducing this intervention?

The goal was to break the stigma around menopause by fostering open conversations and increasing awareness among employees and managers.

The key objectives included:

  • Normalising menopause discussions in the workplace.
  • Providing a support system for employees experiencing menopause.
  • Educating managers on the impact of menopause to enable better support for their teams.
  • Exploring flexible working arrangements to accommodate individual needs.

What impact has this had on women in the workplace?

The introduction of the Meet4Menopause network has led to substantial improvements in employee well-being and organisational culture:

  • Introduced a menopause policy, ensuring structured support and a safe workplace for affected employees.
  • Increased awareness among managers, enabling them to have informed discussions and implement supportive measures such as flexible working arrangements and controlled office environments.
  • Created an open and honest forum, allowing employees to share experiences and learn from one another.
  • Enhanced support for male employees, helping them understand the impact of menopause on their partners and families.
  • Improved performance management, leading to tailored expectations and more effective support for affected employees.

These initiatives have strengthened Pelican Business Services’ commitment to diversity, inclusion, and employee well-being, creating a more supportive and inclusive workplace.
