As we launch free training for staff, we’re reflecting on what we’ve been working on over the last year to create the conditions to support and embed systems change across North Somerset.

These courses have now sold out, you can add your name to the waiting list and you will be contacted if a space comes up.
A sneak preview of research being released this spring, has confirmed what we already know. That training is the beginning of our trauma informed journey. We then need to dedicate time and space to apply and embed the approach, make meaningful change in our practice and to the polices that guide this.
As Dr Karen Treisman states “…the values and principles need to be meaningfully felt, expressed, embodied and modelled. They need to become part of the culture, the soul, the energy, the personality and fabric of the organisation.” Winston Churchill Fellowship report
As the systems change lead in North Somerset, despite the excited and eager calls for training, I was steadfast that opportunities to do this were in place first. Working collaboratively with partners, and learning from others, here’s how we’re doing it.
1. Signing the pledge, evidencing our active commitment to the approach.
2. Creating a shared vision of a trauma informed system with local people and stakeholders.
3. Providing a rolling programme of trauma awareness and recovery workshops.
4. Including how to model the model into Compassionate Leadership training.
5. Creating a community of practice which will focus on implementing the principles.
6. Embedding a compassionate and trauma informed approach into our mental health and wellbeing strategy.
7. Hosting a webinar which explains how our local practice framework can support the journey, in particular, using the self-assessment questionnaire to identify what’s already in place and next steps.
8. Using our Healthy Workplace Awards scheme to support and acknowledge the impact of personal and secondary trauma on staff.
9. Educating trauma ambassadors, how to engage, motivate and support colleagues in the approach.
10. Developing resources, for our website.
