Why Focus on Male Mental Health?
In the UK, men are significantly more likely than women to die by suicide, representing around three-quarters of suicide cases. Men are also less likely to seek professional help, making tailored mental health interventions essential. At North Somerset Council, our Public Health Team is dedicated to understanding the unique challenges faced by men to provide effective, accessible support tailored specifically to their needs.
Supporting Strategic Alignment
Our initiatives align closely with the following strategic plans:
- England’s upcoming National Men’s Health Strategy: Focusing on tailored interventions to improve men’s health.
- North Somerset Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy: Emphasising reducing health inequalities and enhancing wellbeing.
- North Somerset Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy (2024–2029): Prioritising targeted mental health actions and early interventions.
Our Collaborative Approaches
At North Somerset Council, we work closely with external partners to improve male mental health across the region. We have:
- The Male Health Stakeholder Group, which is a voluntary network of local organisations working with North Somerset Council to share insights, coordinate activity, and shape local approaches that support men’s mental health.
- The Action Circle is a smaller group drawn from this network that focuses on practical delivery and turning ideas into action on the ground. The names, logos and links to Action Circle members are shown in the link block below.
