On the 13th of May, North Somerset Council became a signatory to the ‘Why Weight?’ Pledge for Creating Healthier Places Together.

The Pledge is the first of its kind to be developed collaboratively with local authorities and NHS organisations. It sets out ten commitments for creating healthier environments where more people get the chance to eat well, feel well and be active.

The Pledge acknowledges that oversimplification of the causes of unhealthy weight leads to weight stigma, which harms mental and physical health, and instead promotes a compassionate approach to weight. It also focuses on the impact of disparities in conditions in which we are born, grow, live, work and. North Somerset faces unique challenges in creating equal chances for people to access healthy environments, and actions taken forward by this pledge will aim to combat this.

The contents of the Pledge were first agreed on 27 February by partners across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. North Somerset Council will continue to work with partners in delivering on the vision of the pledge.
